Most everyone likes to save money, right? Saving money is probably one of the most common sales pitches for companies out there. When walking through grocery stores it’s very common to see labels that read “now bigger” or “bonus: 4 extra ounces.” Advertisers are always trying to get us to buy there bonus products but saving money really starts with how we live. There are lots of ways to save moneys but these are the top 5 ways the typical American family can save money.

1. Don’t shop at just one store. If you want to save money you have to check the weekly mailers and map out your trips to the store. Especially since grocery stores are so close to each other you can save money on your weekly grocery bill if you shop around. Especially be careful of warehouse stores because if you buy in large quantities to save but don’t use it all, in the end you’ve spent more than necessary.

2. Use rechargeable batteries. Unless you are a complete greeny and only use wind energy, you’ve got batteries in your house somewhere. Even if it’s the little sprinkler system box in the garage. If you have kids, you probably should buy stock in Energizer because when your kids open all those toys at Christmas you are going to need a lot of batteries. Most of your batteries are probably AAA or AA so that makes it really easy to get a battery charger. As a matter of fact, I saw one in the Tehachapi SaveMart for $15. Look at that, SaveMart really knows how to help us Save!

3. Use Vinegar. Who would have ever thought vinegar would have so many uses. From cooking to cleaning, vinegar also works wonders on weeds. Compared to Round-up, you could save a bundle by using vinegar to kill the weeds in your driveway and patio. Just pour it on at full concentration and you’ll see results even faster than you would with Round-up. Try getting the big jug at Costco to save even more money. If you’re not a Costco shopper you will still save money when buying the gallon size at the grocery store.

4. Make a menu. This is one of the best ways for families to save money. Before going grocery shopping, plan out a weekly menu than decide what you need to add to your pantry and refrigerator and create your shopping list. By making a shopping list, you’ll have something you can stick to when you get to the store and you won’t be tempted to order out during the week because you will have a menu to pick from.

5. Shop the internet before buying. We live in the age of information. With just about every store at our fingertips there is really no excuse to not shop for the best price on the items you are looking for. Even this site has a directory of local businesses in Tehachapi…so even if the stores don’t have a website, you can call them because their contact info is so easy to get.

I have implemented these money saving tips into my family’s routine and it’s so nice to have the extra money to spend somewhere else…even if you are single or just a small family, these will work for you. It just takes a little practice.
