Eating at Guido & The Blondes

August 17th, 2007 TheFoodCritic

The only Italian restaurant in Tehachapi, Guido & The Blondes has a fun atmosphere and live music on some nights. The selection is your typical Italian menu including pizza and calzones. The prices are average ($10-$20). The vegetable side dishes are vegetables that have been previously frozen and the salad greens aren’t always as fresh as they could or should be. In my opinion the food is slightly below average and doesn’t really match the price.

Choose for yourself… this is only one opinion. Click for more info on Guido & The Blondes

Wow, so surprised to read a bad review for Guido’s. I am a regular and I might add, quite satisfied customer there. The food is always freshly prepared and served very promptly. Portions are more than adequate and I always take home enough for lunch the next day. The servers, usually the owner Cathy or Erica are always warm and more than efficient. The atmosphere is very nice with white tablecloths and the owner’s personal pictures from Italy on the wall. The lighting is soft and it’s a great spot to take a date. The prices are more than fair with most entrees being between $10 and $14. You can easily afford to take your family there and I personally recommend that you do. You won’t be dissappointed.

I agree with the food critic here. I have only been there once and was so disappointed at both the food and their service that I will not go back again. I make better Italian food at home (more authentic) at a fraction of the price. This is a very poor imitation of good Italian food.

Maybe Jim was in prior to the new management taking over last year. All I know is that it is definitely one of my favorite places to eat.

When did the new management take over? I went there just after Christmas of 2006 and I thought it was poor quality.

Went there last night with my husband after hearing about the new ownership. I had the chicken picatta, he had the dijon chicken. Both were horrible and neither of us finished our meals. My pasta was overcooked, and the picatta sauce was separating before my very eyes – too much lemon juice, very few capers, and lots of oil and some unidentifiable thickening agent – looked more like two day old gravy than lemon-caper sauce. I’ve had better on an airplane. Husband said his chicken was tough and merely smothered in melted mustard, the vegetables previously frozen with the carrots being soggy as a result. He thought the potatoes might be from a box. The garlic bread was made with garlic powder and butter. The fried calamari appetizer was good, though. We did complain and were not charged for either entree. The service was good but that doesn’t make up for terrible food. A frozen entree would be better.

You are right on MrsMcQ! When I was reading your dinner experience I thought I had written it myself. It matched mine exactly only we ordered salads also and got limp, soggy spring mix and we paid instead of complaining. I guess we should have told them how much we didn’t like it but we’ll never have the chance to do that since we won’t go back to Guido’s again. Have you ever ate at Jakes Steakhouse? I do like it there.
