Sequoia National MonumentAlthough Tehachapi is a beautiful place with plenty to do, it’s always nice to travel outside the Tehachapi Mountains. When we want to get away, without spending hours in the car or encountering lots of traffic, we head to Sequoia National Forest where we can find all the outdoor adventure we crave. Tehachapi is about 1½ hrs from Sequoia National Forest and 2½ hours from the southern end of the Monument, but it really depends on which way you drive. Stay off the scenic route if you’re on a budget for time.

Sequoia National Forest & Giant Sequoia National Monument display awesome beauty and some of the world’s largest trees. Whether you need to escape for a day or take a long weekend, the possibilities are endless when your within Sequoia National Forest.

Southern California Whitewater Rafting Near Tehachapi

The Southern Sierra Nevada mountains north of Tehachapi are home to some of the best whitewater rafting runs in California.

Kern River Rafting: Approximately 1.5 Hours from Tehachapi
The Kern River is located off Highway 178 near Lake Isabella. Kern River rafting trips offer 60 miles of runnable river among five different sections. There is something for everyone on the Kern River, ranging from moderate Class II - III rafting trips to advanced Class V for experienced boaters.

Tehachapi Mountain Park

Tehachapi Mountain Park is nestled in the Tehachapi Moutains just 8 miles outside of Tehachapi. Set between Bakersfield and the Mojave Desert, the mountains are the dividing line between the San Jouaquin Valley and the Los Angeles Basin. The park contains 61 family campsites and two group reservation areas, one with 10 cabins. These campsites have great locations, some offer privacy and others are large open areas for bigger groups. The park has flush toilets and showers available for campers. A corral is also available for campers with horses.

Brite Lake - Tehachapi, California

Brite Lake is a man-made lake controlled by the Tehachapi Valley Parks and Recreation District. The lake offers both tent sites and camping with hook-ups and a dumping station. Brite Lake’s 90 acres also has day use areas with picnic tables and ample parking. You can fish in Brite Lake after the last Saturday of April through the last Sunday of October; a permit is required.

Hiking the Pacific Crest TrailThe Pacific Crest Trail, also known as the PCT, passes through California, Oregon & Washington as it zigzags it’s way from Mexico to Canada. The Pacific Crest Trail holds the record for the greatest elevation changes of any American National Scenic Trail.

Joshua tree along the Pacific Crest TrailThe sections most accessible from Tehachapi are in the high desert ecozone… it becomes very hot on a summer afternoon - be sure to carry plenty of water because there are no reliable natural water sources. The Bureau of Land Management describes the Mojave Desert as a forest of Joshua trees and various cacti.
